GROW FLAX

Installation Design

“Grow Flax” is a protest piece that aims to visualise the physicality of how we can sow linen back into our local communities today. It calls for a revival of our linen heritage, reclaiming it from the roots - or rather the seeds. Bridging past to present, the piece is exhibited on vintage linen bobbins, featuring three scrolls that display a typographic response to the scale of the linen industry in Ireland. These scrolls showcase an extensive list of County Down flax growers from 1796, accompanied by a call to urge the return to local flax cultivation. Small seed pouches containing flax seeds are provided, inviting viewers to physically engage with the protest, going hand in hand with the call to action, “Grow flax locally. Reclaim our heritage. Save flax now!”.

Hand grown flax plants are also part of this installation.

Below are some images of testing and the process behind creating this installation. It was hands on to say the least! I really loved creating the hand crafted element and learning about growing flax myself!

Lets grab a coffee & talk about design!
